bto.jpg (18626 bytes)BACHMAN-TURNER OVERDRIVE
, a combination of the last names of the 2 band's founders and the name of the trucker magazine "Overdrive":

Fach agreed to sign the band, but only if they worked hard to promote it with a vigorous touring schedule, and used a new name that reflected both Bachman and Turner's fame. Their new name was inspired by the truckers' magazine Overdrive       BTO was rejected by twenty-five record companies before signing with Mercury records.   Canadian rock band that enjoyed a string of hit albums and singles in the 1970s.  They reunited in the 1980s, leading to a lawsuit as one group, led by Randy, toured as Bachman-Turner Overdrive and another, led by Robbie, toured as BTO.  A lawsuit between the brothers resulted.
How many people still remember Bachman-Turner Overdrive? Okay, how about the songs "Takin' care of business," "Let it roll on down the highway," and "You ain't seen nothin' yet"? Thought so.         BTO had a bunch of gold records in a very short time, but they did not last long enough (for personal reasons) to put an indelible stamp into the world's consciousness. Worse, when they came back in the 1980s, they turned down a multimillion dollar offer from a promoter to manage their own act; the music industry snubbed them, and they ended up playing to much smaller houses than they should have. The band underwent personnel changes until half of it was new. Then, at almost the same time, the "old" band formed to play with Ringo Starr's nationwide tour. It was messy, and the names of their new records didn't help. "Bachman-Turner Overdrive" had completely different songs from the 1974 record. Their PR sheet actually quoted from a college newspaper (not that I minded :).bto2.jpg (8274 bytes)              The band was good. Their music was more sophisticated than most would credit, partly because most probably never heard it in full stereo on good equipment. (High quality headphones are the best way to experience BTO). But they were never too good at pleasing critics. When they kept to a fairly uniform style (Four Wheel Drive, Not Fragile), they were called commercial and repetitive. When they deviated, they were criticized even more, and that in an era of truly pretentious bands.        Another reviewer noted BTO's blue collar attitude and emphasis, and it's certainly true that if they were auto-oriented they were also good workmen. They worked hard at their trade, and their music had a surprising polish especially when compared to contemporary hard rock bands. Most of their mid-life songs are fast and energetic. Their trademark sound was strongest and most consistent on Not Fragile and Four Wheel Drive, with traces on BTO, BTO II, and Freeways; it was completely gone by the time Rock N Roll Nights came out.        They played good music in their comeback. They had energy, they had great new songs, they had no publicity and they just couldn't do it on their own. Times had changed. Simply touring and being good weren't enough without commercial backing and bucks for the DJs. So they disappeared back into obscurity. Randy Bachman got together with Neil Young and they did a couple of solo albums, but they never really got any airplay. At least they had a little fun and we got a little good music.      Wonder if we all bought their CDs, whether it would change anything? Probably not, but we'd have some good music. Just avoid the compilations and go for the individual CDs - they're cheap and they're good and they have more songs if you get all of 'em than the compilations do......  CLICK  TO CONTINUE  ===>     http://www.allpar.com/ed/bto.html              RandyBachman.jpg (6785 bytes)

Randall Charles Bachman (born September 27, 1943) Randy was a part of the 1970s rock band, The Guess Who, and later Bachman-Turner Overdrive. He became a legendary figure in the rock and roll world through his talents as a guitarist, songwriter, and performer. Bachman was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.        In 2000, he made a guest appearance on The Simpsons as himself with his former Bachman-Turner Overdrive band-mates.    Simpsons creator Matt Groening (whose dad is originally from Winnipeg), is a well known BTO fan.       http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randy_Bachman

When they told us to make another Razamanaz, and many people said it, but we wanted to do it our way. Boogaloo is the way it is because it was created how we felt the music, not to create another Razamanaz, though it is a little closer style-wise than some of the softer albums."After 1990, when the borders opened up, we started to play in Russia and some other countries. The atmosphere was just excellent. Much better than concerts in America let`s say. "Long Cool Woman"= Perhaps the song that was furthest from The Hollies traditional music. This song is styled exactly like Credence Clearwater Revival, an obvious homage to them. The song begins with a heavy beat and moves into a fast-paced beat with reverb and solid guitar work...... one of The Hollies best works.

ASCAP says Greenaway will take his post sometime around July 1, when his precise title will be announced.     Greenaway and his longtime partner, Roger Cook, carried off a joint Ivor Novello Award last week, receiving the Jimmy Kennedy Prize for longstanding achievement.   Roger Greenaway finished recording his CD "Wayt" in June 2001, after three years in the making. Roger worked with Mike Gibson of INCA productions in Wellington, some fantastic musicians like Stefan Wolf, Daniel Bar Evan and it seemed countless others, to record 12 great pieces.  A track from these sessions was chosen for TV 3's "Get your act together"(1999).... Yes. Having met Rikki Morris and Debbie Harwood and with their help Roger proceeded to record with Justin Harwood and Rikki at the beginning of 2000 in Piha and "The Bus" studios in Devonport.  The album has been described as alternative, retrospective and psychedelic....Sunshine (creative outlet of Greenaway

In 1964 a local DJ asked Tommy and the group to sign with his new regional label, "Snap Records". One of the 4 sides they recorded was an obscure song written by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich called "Hanky Panky". The group changed their name to "The Shondells" and released it as a single. It was an instant local hit but didn't break nationally and was soon forgotten.  Two years later, in May of '66, amazingly the record exploded out of Pittsburgh and "Hanky Panky" was a smash! Unable to put the original group back together, Tommy went to Pittsburgh alone and hired the first local band he could find to be The Shondells. Two weeks later the new group signed a record deal with Roulette Records in New York and "Hanky Panky" became the biggest hit of the summer of '66. Thus began one of the longest strings of non-stop hits in the record business.       With the breakup of The Shondells, Tommy continued with a solo career beginning with the writing and producing of the million selling "Tighter, Tighter" for the group Alive 'N Kickin".        Vice President Hubert Humphrey asked Tommy to head his "Youth Affairs" commission while performing on his 1968 Presidential campaign. Mr. Humphrey also wrote the liner notes for Tommy's "CRIMSON AND CLOVER" album. They remained good friends until his death in 1978.....    continue in ==> http://www.tommyjames.com/factoids.php         At one point in 1987, Tiffany and Billy Idol, with their versions of "I Think We're Alone Now" and "Mony Mony", fought it out for the top spot on the charts for a solid month, each eventually going number one. When Idol released his version, it became popular for kids dance and shout (gritarem)"hey, hey, what, get laid (deite), get fuked"  (changing the instrumental break in the chorus 'Ooh I love you Mony, Mo, Mo, Mony').  Anyone who went to a prom (promenade, baile estudantil)  when this was popular,  verified this.         Idol first released his first version as a single in 1981, his first record as a solo artist after leaving Generation X.  (Vc vê q ñ é só com grupos q se faz sucesso).  He believed in the power of the song and insisted releasing his live version 6 years after (1987) which went to #1 US and #7 UK,  his biggest hit...........continue in http://www.tommyjames.com/biography.php

With Ritchie Cordell writing and producing most of their hit material, Tommy James and the Shondells became prime exponents of bubblegum pop. Indeed, the bubbly effect on the intro to 'I Think We're Alone Now', as well as the song's innocent lyrics and heady melody, make it the perfect example of a much-maligned genre. The party anthem 'Mony Mony', co-written by Cordell, his songwriting partner Bo Gentry, Tommy James and Bobby Bloom, reached No 3 in the US and was a British No 1 in 1968. In the late '60s, Cordell left Roulette to join the Super-K operation of Jerry Kasenetz and Jeff Katz, composing disposable singles for the one-hit wonders Crazy Elephant and the 1910 Fruitgum Company. He spent the '70s as a publisher, songwriter and producer before working with Bow Wow Wow and Joan Jett in the '80s. .......

Bobby Bloom (+) =
New York-based, Bloom began his career   during the '60s as one of several backroom entrepreneurs,  including Anders And Poncia, Artie Ripp and Levine/Reisnick,  central to the Kama Sutra/Buddah group of labels. He also made  several solo recordings, including Love Don't Let Me Down and   Count On Me, and later formed a partnership with composer/producer  Jeff Barry. Together, they contributed material for the latter-day Mon kees, notably Ticket On A Ferry Ride and You're So Good To Me.   Bloom's singing career blossomed with the effervescent Montego   Bay which reached the US Top 10 and UK Top 3 in 1970. Its adept   combination of bubblegum, calypso and rock was maintained on   "Heavy Makes You Happy" and THE BOBBY BLOOM ALBUM, which  Barry produced. However, despite this seeming ascendancy, a  troubled Bloom was killed in an accidental shooting in 1971 (sic).

An otherwise ordinary day in 1960, a teenaged Mick Jagger made his way through a railway station in Dartford, England, with a few blues albums tucked under his arm. It's impossible to say what was going through his head that day but his timing was perfect. He walked at just the right pace, took just the right turns, made just the right decisions, and ran right into an old childhood acquaintance, Keith Richards, with whom he would quickly rekindle a friendship. A short four years later, the two stood at the center of the most controversial and some would say greatest rock-and-roll band in the world .

Guns N' Roses is an American hard rock band that originated in Los Angeles in 1985.           The name was derived from the pseudonyms of two of the original members, Tracii Guns and Axl Rose. Earlier names of the band were Rose and Hollywood Rose. Although Tracii Guns left by the end of 1986, the Guns N' Roses name stayed.        In 1989, Guns N' Roses were presented with the American Music Award for favorite Pop/Rock single for Sweet Child O' Mine. At the televised annual award show in 1999, Duff McKagen and Slash appeared intoxicated and used strong language while accepting the award for Best Heavy Metal Album for Appetite For Destruction, and Best Heavy Metal Song for Paradise City. Jeff Lynne= Usually candid an
d open about his own work and musical ideals; almost never speaks publically on other topics. Fans who've met Lynne usually found him kind, and straightforward.     Began Electric Light Orchestra with Roy Wood as a side-project to their band 'The Move' ; the side-project soon eclipsed the main one, and the Move disbanded.    Transformed his Los Angeles home into a housewide recording studio, with patch bays in every room; used this extensively in making his latest album, the re-constituted ELO's 'Zoom'.     Actually worked sparsely with Electric Light Orchestra in the recording studio; band members would learn Lynne's new songs just prior to recording, and usually would hear them next on the radio... shortly before tour rehearsals began. Live recordings of ELO tend to reflect a rawer sound than their highly-polished studio work, though in performance the accompanying light-show and theatrics well made up for it.     Began his musical ventures with an old two-track tape recorder in his parents' living room; Lynne would sometimes overlay so many parts the oxide would wear off the tape.

Dave Appell =
Arranger / bandleader / guitarist / songwriter / producer.
The name Dave Appell will probably be associated first of all with the Cameo-Parkway label, in the history of which he played a substantial part. Appell worked as an arranger for several big bands during his wartime service, including Jimmie Lunceford's black orchestra. During the early fifties his Dave Appell Quartet was the studio band for comedian Ernie Kovacs' first TV program in Philadelphia. Changing the name of his group to the Applejacks, he recorded for Decca Records and appeared prominently in the 1956 Alan Freed film "Don't Knock the Rock". Next Appell and the Applejacks were playing in Las Vegas, but they soon began to pine for their hometown and returned to Philly, where they began working for Cameo Records, a label founded by Kal Mann and Bernie Lowe over a Christmas party in 1956. Appell became a jack-of-all-trades at Cameo, doing background vocals, session work as a guitarist, engineering and arranging. One of the first things he and his group did for Cameo was backing John Zacherle on his Top 10 hit "Dinner With Drac". The Applejacks also broke into the national charts under their own name, with the instrumentals "Mexican Hat Rock" (# 16), a jumped-up version of the old "Mexican Hat Dance", and "Rocka-Conga" (# 38), both in 1958. Appell went on to become the leader of Cameo-Parkway's house band, backing such artists as Chubby Checker, Bobby Rydell, the Dovells and Dee Dee Sharp, whose records he also arranged and in many cases co-wrote, including "Let's Twist Again", "Bristol Stomp" and "Mashed Potato Time". These were the years of the twist and other dance crazes, in the launching of which Appell played a vitale role. Appell left Cameo in 1964. In the seventies he had great success with his productions for Tony Orlando and Dawn, including the # 1 hits "Knock Three Times" (1970) and "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree" (1973), on Bell Records. Appell's co-producer was Hank Medress, who had been a founding member of the Tokens in 1956 and also sang in the reformed Tokens of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" fame.
